CANDIDATE INTERVIEW

MEET LATOYA

EXPERIENCED INTEGRITY FIGHTING FOR TRUTH AND JUSTICE

Latoya Willis has spent nearly half of her life in the legal profession.  After graduating from Western Michigan University as a Criminal Justice and Sociology major, Latoya earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Detroit Mercy Law School and was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 2002. Immediately upon passing the Michigan Bar exam, Latoya was hired as an Assistant Prosecutor in the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. She has been serving the citizens of Wayne County in the Prosecutor’s Office for over 21 years. In those years she has handled over 1000 cases, rising

through the ranks working in various departments, including: Forfeiture, District Courts, General Trials, and Elder and Vulnerable Adult Abuse. In 2017, Latoya was promoted to the lead attorney of the Mortgage and Deed Fraud Task Force, where she continues to work. These varying assignments have given her a breadth of experience prosecuting a variety of cases including drug and nuisance forfeiture, operating while intoxicated, assault, home invasion, carjacking, criminal sexual conduct, and homicide. Her current position has given her the added experience of prosecuting cases involving illegal transfers of property, mortgage fraud and criminal enterprise (“paper cases”).

In addition to her career as a prosecuting attorney, Latoya has also volunteered for many organizations aimed at improving the Michigan legal system. She has served as a board member of the Government Bar Association Union which she has been a member of for 21 years. She is the former Chair of the Attorney Grievance Commission - the investigative and prosecutorial arm of the Michigan Supreme Court for allegations of attorney misconduct.  Latoya served on this Commission for over seven years after receiving an appointment by the Michigan Supreme Court. She also serves on the Criminal Jurisprudence and Practice Committee where she reviews and makes recommendations on proposed court rules, administrative rules and legislation. In addition, she serves as a member of the Character & Fitness Committee where she participates in the vetting of future attorneys for their fitness to practice in the legal profession.  Latoya also volunteers her time as a member of the Farmington Hills Police and Fire Benevolence Commission.

Latoya has served out her legal career as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, not because she could not find more lucrative opportunities elsewhere, but because she feels called to protect and serve the people of the state of Michigan.  Victims, defendants, plaintiffs, respondents…and the community deserve individuals within the justice system that will serve capably, honorably and with integrity.  She has been married to her husband for 24 years and they have two beautiful children, a son and daughter who are both in college.
